About this event
Take a free guided tour of the City of Melbourne’s Art and Heritage Collection store and discover our city’s hidden cultural treasures. Located in the historic Melbourne Town Hall, the entire fourth floor has been refurbished as an open collection display ready for the public to explore. The Collection is eclectic and includes over 13,000 artworks and cultural artefacts. This material is arranged according to thematically and theatrically organised ‘chapters’. Key themes include Melbourne city events such as Moomba and the 1956 Olympic Games, managing our city, Town Hall and ceremonial, city gifts and treasures, books and plans, and photography. The Collection also holds a large number of contemporary artworks, including public art maquettes and street art. Recent acquisitions include a major donation of artworks which were commissioned for the Metro Tunnel Creative Project. Our collection of contemporary artworks also includes work by urban-based First Nations artists. A sustained acquisitions focus on developing this important element of the collection has seen it become the most significant of its kind among the capital city collections of Australia.
