About this event

Join us for a workshop at the Victorian Pride Centre.

Curious about quantum? Wonder what superposition and quantum entanglement mean for everyday life? Monash Quantum Futures Collaboration and Quantum Australia will demystify quantum and explore what it could mean for our daily lives.

Experts from fields ranging from health to technology will consider what a quantum-powered future could look like. Beginning with presentations on quantum innovation presented in plain language, the session will then use co-design tools to explore the potential impacts of quantum on everyday life over the next ten–twenty years – from work, education, banking and communication to healthcare and transport.

This session invites audiences to explore how quantum might shape our shared future.

Speakers

Leah Heiss – Monash Quantum Futures Collaboration

Daniel Hunter and Adrian Gertler – Quantum Australia

Errol Hunt, ARC Centre of Excellence in Quantum Biotechnology (QUBIC)

Nicolas Menicucci, RMIT Quantum Physics

Hunter Johnson, Melbourne University, CSIRO x QUBIC Next

Carley Scott, Founder, Space CoLAB – Quantum Communications

The Monash Quantum Futures Collaboration engages citizens, industry, academia, and government to support Australia’s quantum readiness. It explores how life, work, and institutions may evolve as quantum innovations emerge, and involves Australians in shaping the nation’s quantum future. The initiative is a collaboration between Monash University Emerging Technologies Research Lab, Quantum Australia, the University of Helsinki and the University of Sydney. Monash University research leads are: A/Prof Leah Heiss, Prof. Sarah Pink, Dr Debora Lanzeni, and Bianca Vallentine.

This year, Monash Design will extend Monash University’s Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture’s commitment to ‘creativity for purpose’, by examining and demonstrating design’s key role in actioning this ambition. Through a series of workshops, interactive engagements, exhibitions and guest lectures, this series of events will showcase the Australian-made design projects with a strong focus on design futures that demonstrate design’s diverse contribution to the world through responsible, thoughtful, inclusive and accountable approaches to design research and practice. It will draw on the extensive and highly respected research of its core research labs, including the Emerging Technologies Lab (designing quantum futures), XYX Lab (queer film stories); and Mobility Design Lab (accessing our cities through improved public mobility systems). Individual researchers and practitioners will contribute to vital discussions and demonstrations such as: sustainable futures and designing research translations. Both Postgraduate and undergraduate student projects and design methods will also feature.

Melbourne Design Week is an initiative of the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria.
