India's Solar Growth Attracts Global Attention

MUNICH — India is rapidly expanding its solar energy market, with plans to deploy up to 50 gigawatts in 2026, making it the world’s second-largest market, according to a recent announcement at Intersolar Europe. The event, held from June 23 to 25 in Munich, emphasised India’s growing importance in the photovoltaic (PV) sector.

India’s significant investment in solar energy, bolstered by government funding, tax incentives, and green loans, resulted in an addition of 37.5 gigawatts in 2025, a 50% increase from the previous year. This growth was highlighted at Intersolar Europe, part of The smarter E Europe, the largest energy industry exhibition in Europe, which attracted over 100,000 visitors and 2,800 exhibitors.

Challenges and Opportunities in India’s Solar Expansion

Despite the rapid growth, challenges such as the need for skilled workers and infrastructure improvements persist. David Wedepohl, Managing Director International Affairs at the German Solar Association, noted India as a key market for both sales and production capacity expansion in the solar sector.

The signing of a free trade agreement between the European Commission and India in January 2026 further strengthens India’s position. Dr. Puzant Baliozian from VDMA highlighted India’s dynamic production capabilities, spanning module production to polysilicon, and the potential for increased EU-India trade relations.

The expansion of solar energy in India is further facilitated by the decreasing costs of solar power, which have fallen by 80% since 2010, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency. This cost reduction positions solar energy as the most economical option for new power installations.

India’s commitment to renewable energy is demonstrated through its participation in various international collaborations and forums aimed at enhancing sustainable energy practices. The country’s strategic initiatives not only focus on increasing solar capacity but also on fostering innovation and research in solar technology, ensuring long-term sustainability and resilience in its energy sector.
