Largest Non-Government Investment in WA History
Researchers in blood cancer now have a unique opportunity as the Leukaemia Foundation, together with The University of Western Australia (UWA), invites applications for the Tony Fini Chair in Blood Cancer. This prestigious position signifies a major leap forward in the field.
Thanks to a landmark $3 million investment, this chair represents the largest non-government funding for blood cancer research in Western Australia. Named after Tony Fini, a renowned philanthropist, the role honours the Fini family’s support for the Leukaemia Foundation since 2010 through the Tony Fini Foundation.
“The successful candidate will lead an ambitious, internationally competitive programme focused on prevention, early detection, and diagnostics,” stated Bill Stavreski, Head of Research at the Leukaemia Foundation. This role is a pivotal opportunity to influence the future of blood cancer research both locally and globally.
Responsibilities of the Chair
Open to clinician researchers and laboratory-based researchers, the position focuses on both adult and paediatric populations. Responsibilities include leading a high-performing team, mentoring emerging researchers, and establishing strategic partnerships across sectors. It is a role designed to push the boundaries of current research methodologies.
Stavreski emphasised, “We seek an exceptional applicant dedicated to accelerating research that addresses crucial gaps and delivers meaningful impact for patients, families, and communities affected by blood cancer.” Applications will remain open until 11:55pm AWST on 12th July 2026, and interested parties can apply via the UWA careers website.
