Palliative Care Integration Crucial, Says Expert
Australia must fundamentally overhaul its approach to dementia care, according to Dr Michael Chapman, a leading palliative care physician. He spoke at the National Palliative Care Week 2026 Special Guest Lecture, emphasizing the need for early and consistent integration of palliative care for dementia patients.
Dr Chapman delivered his lecture at Parliament House on 14th May, noting that dementia has become the leading cause of death among older Australians. Many patients are not recognised as needing palliative care until very late in their illness.
Dr Chapman stated, "We have accepted a view that nothing can be done when someone has dementia, and that is simply not true. There are real opportunities to improve quality of life, support families, and provide care that reflects what matters most to the person."
Need for Integrated Care Systems
Highlighting the issue of aged care, dementia care, and palliative care often operating in silos, Dr Chapman advocated for a more integrated approach. This strategy would bring these services together and act earlier in the disease progression.
Dr Peter Allcroft, Chairman of Palliative Care Australia, participated in the event and echoed the need for improved access to palliative care across the country. He remarked, "Too many Australians are missing out on palliative care until very late, or not receiving it at all. The situation is even worse for people with dementia."
Practical solutions proposed by Dr Chapman include initiating earlier conversations about care, providing better support for families and carers, and implementing care models that incorporate palliative care expertise into aged care settings.
National Palliative Care Week, running from 10th to 16th May, aims to encourage Australians to engage in discussions about end-of-life care through the theme 'Getting to the heart of it: Big Questions. Real Answers.' A recording of Dr Chapman's lecture is available online for those interested in further insights.
