Over One Million Displaced in Escalating Conflict
SYDNEY — Australia has announced a $5 million humanitarian aid package to support Lebanon amidst a severe crisis that has displaced over one million people since early March, according to World Vision. This support aims to assist civilians affected by the escalating conflict that has resulted in significant casualties and injuries.
World Vision Australia‘s CEO, Grant Bayldon, confirmed the funding, emphasizing the urgent need for resources as over 1,000 people, including more than 100 children, have lost their lives, with 2,000 more injured. “We thank the Australian Government for standing with the people of Lebanon. The protection of civilians, especially children, must remain the absolute priority,” Bayldon stated.
The humanitarian situation in Lebanon has deteriorated rapidly, with airstrikes targeting critical infrastructure and transport routes, particularly in South Lebanon. This has significantly disrupted civilian movement and hampered aid delivery, exacerbating the crisis.
Impact of Australian Aid
The Australian Government’s contribution will be funneled through United Nations and NGO partners, providing essential services such as food, shelter, healthcare, water, and sanitation. World Vision Lebanon, which has been active in the region for over 45 years, has already reached more than 150,000 people, including 52,000 children, through their relief efforts.
According to Heidi Diedrich, National Director of World Vision Lebanon, the new support comes at a critical moment. “Children are bearing the brunt of this crisis, each day it goes on since the escalation began on 2 March,” she remarked.
Australia’s ongoing support for Lebanon and its surrounding areas has surpassed $130 million since October 2023, highlighting the nation’s commitment to aiding regions in conflict. This announcement follows increased international calls for humanitarian assistance as the situation worsens.
