Bring It On The Musical will play at The National Theatre in St Kilda from 11th July to 26th July, with tickets now on sale.

The production is being staged by independent theatre group Theatrical Inc and is based on the Bring It On film franchise.

The musical follows Campbell, a champion teen cheerleader who is redistricted from her affluent high school to rival school Jackson High. After the move, she joins forces with Jackson High’s dance crew to compete against her former squad at the Cheerleading Nationals.

The stage version features music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, known for Hamilton and In The Heights, and Tom Kitt, whose credits include American Idiot and Jagged Little Pill. The book is by Jeff Whitty, who won a Tony Award for Avenue Q.

The original Broadway production received 2013 Tony Award nominations for Best Musical and Best Choreography.

Cheerleading, rivalry and high school politics

The story centres on the clash between two high school social worlds, with the musical exploring friendship, identity, competition, and the pressure to fit in.

Theatrical Inc said the show also includes Broadway’s first openly transgender high school character, as its teen characters deal with cliques, teamwork and personal integrity.

Director Tahra Cannon said the cast had been working through the show’s demanding physical and musical elements in rehearsal.

“Every rehearsal continues to showcase the exceptional talent, dedication and versatility within this cast,” Cannon said.

Choreographer Louise Panagiotidis said the production’s dance numbers had been taking shape throughout rehearsals.

“It’s been so exciting to watch the choreography come to life in Bring It On rehearsals,” Panagiotidis said.

Bring It On The Musical will run at The National Theatre in St Kilda from 11th July to 26th July.
