GLO Gelato adds pear crumble at Carlton for winter

GLO Gelato has brought back its Apple Custard Crumble for winter, with the seasonal dessert now available at its Carlton store and the Queen Victoria Winter Night Market.

The dessert combines warm apple crumble with hot custard poured fresh to order, before it is finished with artisan gelato. It returns after being introduced last winter, when GLO Gelato says customers responded strongly to the hot and cold dessert.

A new Pear Custard Crumble has also joined the winter menu. The limited-edition version uses stewed pears, chocolate crumble and vanilla custard, and is available only at GLO Gelato Carlton.

The move gives the Lygon Street gelateria two warm desserts for the colder months, with the apple version available throughout winter and the pear version on the menu for a limited time.

Winter desserts return to GLO Gelato

GLO Gelato founder Alfredo “Alfie” Mercuri said the idea came from watching the rise of hot custard crumble overseas.

“At GLO, we’ve always liked doing things a little differently,” Mercuri said.

“We noticed hot custard crumble becoming increasingly popular overseas and thought it was something Melbourne was missing. We launched the Apple Custard Crumble last winter, and customers absolutely loved it.”

The dessert sits apart from a standard gelato serve by using warm crumble, hot custard and cold gelato in the same dish. While gelato is often treated as a summer product, the winter menu gives GLO a colder-weather item built around comfort rather than refreshment.

“This year it’s back for winter, along with a new Pear Custard flavour. There’s something about warm crumble, hot custard and cold gelato that just works on a cold Melbourne night,” Mercuri said.

The Apple Custard Crumble is available at GLO Gelato Carlton and the Queen Victoria Winter Night Market.

The Limited Edition Pear Custard Crumble is available only at GLO Gelato Carlton.
