Summons Considered for Non-Compliant Groups

The Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters, on June 24, 2026, chose to re-invite the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church and Advance to provide evidence as part of its ongoing review of the 2025 federal election. This decision follows their previous refusals to attend hearings in November 2025, and March and May 2026. As a result, the Committee has resolved to issue a summons to ensure their participation if they decline once again.

Over 75 submissions to the Committee have mentioned the Plymouth Brethren, noting their presence in around 80 suburbs within federal electorates across Australia. This significant presence has prompted the Committee to seek clarity on their involvement.

Community Concerns Highlighted

Issuing a summons is considered extraordinary by the Committee, but it believes this step is necessary due to the considerable community concerns about these groups’ roles in the 2025 election. Questions about their influence on the electoral process have become prominent.

Jerome Laxale, Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters, emphasised, “Given the volume of submissions and the level of community concern, it is not just in the Committee’s interest, but Australia’s interest, to understand the involvement of both of these third parties.”

The Committee plans to make information on the hearings available on its Public Hearings webpage as details are finalised. This review of the 2025 election by the Committee aims to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral process. Investigating third-party involvement is a crucial part of this effort.
