Report Highlights Economic Impact of Construction Materials

SYDNEY — A new report by Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia (CCAA) underscores the significant role of heavy construction materials in meeting New South Wales’s housing and infrastructure targets. The report, titled “The Economic Contribution of the Cement Concrete and Aggregates Industry in Australia,” reveals that in the fiscal year 2024/25, the industry added $4.27 billion to the state’s Gross State Product and supported over 19,000 jobs. This contribution highlights the integral part the sector plays in the broader economic landscape of the region.

New South Wales stands as the largest contributor to the national cement, concrete, and aggregates output, reflecting its extensive construction activities and infrastructure development, according to the report. Major projects such as Sydney Metro West and the Western Harbour Tunnel are underway, alongside investments in renewable energy and housing, all of which demand a consistent supply of materials. These projects are not only pivotal for local development but also serve as benchmarks for future construction initiatives in Australia.

Challenges and Planning for Material Supply

CCAA CEO Michael Kilgariff emphasised the necessity of a stable supply chain for construction materials, warning that disruptions could lead to project delays and increased costs. “The state’s infrastructure and housing pipeline rely on a steady, high-volume supply of cement, concrete, and aggregates,” Kilgariff stated. The report also highlights the pressure on quarry resources due to urban expansion and energy transitions, necessitating long-term planning to secure these resources. This aspect is critical as it directly impacts the timing and cost-effectiveness of ongoing and future projects.

As New South Wales aims to accommodate population growth and urban expansion, the report calls for government action to recognise heavy construction materials as essential infrastructure components. Proper planning and support for upstream supply chains are crucial for sustaining economic growth and productivity in the state. By ensuring that these materials are readily available, the state can better position itself to handle both current demands and future challenges in infrastructure development.
