New Timeline and Benefits Announced for EV Owners
Australians will continue to benefit from the full Electric Car Discount for most electric vehicles (EVs) until 2027, according to the Federal Government’s recent announcement. This move offers much-needed cost-of-living relief, as families save about $3,000 each year on fuel and maintenance.n
Starting April 2027, electric vehicles priced up to $75,000 will still receive a full fringe benefits tax (FBT) exemption. Meanwhile, those priced between $75,000 and $91,000 will enjoy a 25 per cent FBT discount, broadening accessibility for families.n
“A clear pathway to ditch petrol costs” is how Julie Delvecchio, Chief Executive of the Electric Vehicle Council, described the decision. This initiative ensures significant savings on household fuel expenses and marks a pivotal step towards Australia’s sustainability goals.n
Policy Changes to Support EV Uptaken
From April 2029, all eligible EVs under the luxury car tax threshold will receive a 25 per cent FBT discount. These measures align with Australia’s strategy to achieve the national target of five million EVs on roads by 2035, promoting a greener future.n
Popular EV models from BYD, Tesla, and Hyundai will continue to qualify for full exemptions until 2029, according to the Electric Vehicle Council. This continuity ensures ongoing savings while the government remains committed to enhancing EV accessibility.n
“This decision protects our progress toward the 2035 target and keeps it ambitious but within reach,” commented Delvecchio, emphasizing the importance of stable policy and infrastructure development. The council commends the government for its vision for a sustainable future.n
Existing arrangements will be grandfathered, ensuring current EV drivers and leaseholders remain unaffected by these changes. The Electric Vehicle Council will keep collaborating with the government to monitor market dynamics and policy effectiveness, facilitating a smooth transition for all stakeholders.n
These policy adjustments are expected to ensure financial sustainability for the incentive, aligning with broader efforts to cut carbon emissions and encourage cleaner transportation solutions. The extended timeline provides stability, inspiring more Australians to explore the benefits of switching to electric vehicles.
