Details of the $5.1 Billion Project
On May 21, 2026, Emirates began construction on its ultra-modern engineering facility at Dubai South, investing US$ 5.1 billion. This project aims to propel Dubai’s aviation capabilities forward.
China Railway Construction Corporation is developing the facility, with Artelia as project consultants. It is set to become the world’s most advanced maintenance, repair, and overhaul hub, reflecting Dubai’s leadership vision.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates airline and Group, and Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline. Their attendance underscores the project’s regional significance.
World-Class Infrastructure Details
Spanning 1.1 million square meters, the facility will feature the world’s largest free-span hangar and a dedicated landing gear workshop. It will also accommodate 28 wide-body aircraft and have two painting hangars, showcasing its extensive capabilities.
Sustainability is a key focus, with all facilities aiming for a LEED Platinum rating. Solar panels will be installed on the roofs to support this goal, demonstrating Emirates’ commitment to eco-friendly practices.
HE Khalifa Al Zaffin highlighted the project’s alignment with Dubai’s vision to remain the aviation capital of the world. The development will enhance infrastructure at Al Maktoum International Airport, which is set to become the largest upon completion.
Construction is expected to be completed by mid-2030. Initially, the facility will support heavy maintenance tasks from Emirates’ current engineering centre at Dubai International Airport, ensuring seamless operational integration.
Dai Hegen, Chairman of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, described the project as a milestone in UAE-China cooperation. This collaboration strengthens bilateral relations and promotes practical cooperation in infrastructure development.
The investment aligns with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, reinforcing Dubai’s position as a global economic hub and centre of aviation excellence. This facility lays the foundations for future growth in the UAE and the wider MRO industry.
