ANTIGONE
Antigone is a new, heart-wrenching, site-specific piece of theatre, adapted for contemporary audiences from the classic Greek tragedy of the same name.
After the tumultuous fall of Oedipus caused his sons to battle for the throne, both brothers died by each other’s hand. Eteocles fought for Thebes, while Polynices fought against the city. The new king Creon declares that Polynices’ betrayal will leave him unburied and unmourned, but his sister Antigone, bound by love for her family and the pain they’ve already suffered, refuses to let this happen – even if it means her own doom.
Antigone is an old play, but the questions it raises – who is allowed to mourn, and who gets to make that decision? – have echoed throughout history. This adaptation, with simplified language and a more modern setting, begs these questions of a world where every one of us is witness to genocide. Though altered, the heart of the play remains the same, reminding us that part of the tragedy is that it’s an old one we can’t seem to let go of.
