About this event
Diwali comes to Preston Library with a relaxed evening of hands-on crafts and cultural sharing. Whether you grew up celebrating or are just Diwali-curious, this is a welcoming way to connect with the traditions behind the festival over art and conversation.
Celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, through a guided, hands-on cultural craft workshop.
Create your own paper diyas or marigold garland while exploring the traditions, symbolism, and cultural significance that make Diwali such a meaningful celebration.
Diwali’s origins are from South Asia. Also known as Deepavali, Bandi Chhor Diwas and Tihar, it is a “festival of lights” celebrated by millions of people and families around the world. The festival symbolises the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.
This event is presented with Taste of India.
Taste of India has served as a not for profit organisation, bringing together our immigrant population through arts, music and dance.

Preston Library is a friendly local spot and, as anyone who’s attended their community events will know, it attracts a real cross-section of the neighbourhood. The atmosphere is low-key and inclusive, perfect for getting to know people over a creative activity. You’ll find the staff genuinely engaged and happy to chat about the meaning behind the crafts. This gathering is great for families, solo adults or anyone keen to learn more about South Asian festivals. Unlike bigger Diwali events in Federation Square or Dandenong, this one is quieter and more hands-on, so you’ll get a chance to ask questions and take home something you’ve made. It’s a relaxed introduction to Diwali’s spirit right in the heart of the Darebin community.
