About the artists:
Cempoaxochitl is a Nahuatl (First Nations people of Central Mexico) word, translating to what is commonly known as the Flor de Muerto (Flower of the dead/Mexican marigold). The word itself, cempoa (20 or many) and xochitl (flower), or ‘flower of many petals’ epitomises the spirit of community collaboration. The workshop will be led by Nisa Yam Richy of Cempoaxochitl Arts Collective (CAC).
Nisa (she/her) is a Queer Yucatec Maaya, Mexican, Crimean Tatar and Southern European artisan, arts worker and researcher, currently living in Naarm on the unceded lands of the Kulin nation. Having grown up in so-called ‘Australia’, her work focuses on cultural connection and celebration through art, Indigenous research methodologies, and community collaboration. CAC is a Meanjin/Brisbane based Mexican artists collective who create art and cultural events, facilitating cultural exchange and storytelling across so-called Australia and Mexico.

Coburg Library has a welcoming, community-first feel, especially in the evenings when locals gather for thoughtful events. Making paper marigolds together brings a gentle sense of togetherness, and the conversations that flow are as important as the craft itself. It’s a lovely way to mark the season and experience a tradition not often celebrated in such an open, accessible space in Melbourne. This is ideal for anyone curious about Mexican culture, or just keen to unwind with something creative and meaningful. Unlike some other craft sessions, there’s a genuine sense of purpose and connection here, making it memorable for newcomers and regulars alike.
