Party Plans Legislative Changes in Victoria

In a bold move, Family First has announced its intention to restore biological definitions of male and female in Victorian law. This aims to ensure that women’s sports and spaces remain exclusively for women. The announcement comes amid the 2026 Victorian election campaign.

This legislative proposal seeks to provide clear protection for female-only sporting categories. It addresses the current legal uncertainty following Victoria’s removal of biological definitions from state law. As a result, biological males are competing against female athletes, leading to unfairness in women’s sports.

Sports clubs in Victoria are reportedly facing anti-discrimination complaints for maintaining female-only categories. Family First plans to codify protections for women’s refuges, prisons, and health services to safeguard vulnerable women. Protecting women’s refuges and healthcare services is crucial for their safety and well-being, and this is a key focus of the party’s proposed legislation.

Family First’s Legislative Agenda

Jane Foreman of Family First highlighted the necessity of restoring biological definitions, stating, “Women fought for decades to earn their place on the sporting field, in the workforce, and in our laws. The Allan government is erasing everything they won.”

Despite the Allan government’s stance, no major party contesting the election has committed to restoring these definitions. Family First criticizes Labour, Liberal, and the Greens for not addressing what they call ‘unfairness’ in women’s sports. The party believes that the current legal framework fails to protect the integrity of women’s sports and spaces.

According to Family First, young female athletes deserve to compete fairly, and government support is crucial in protecting their rights. “They deserve to know that their government sees them, values them, and will protect their right to compete fairly,” Foreman asserted. The party is committed to implementing legislative measures to restore fairness in sports and protect women’s rights.

The removal of biological definitions of male and female has led to significant challenges in maintaining single-sex spaces, Family First argues. Women’s refuges, prisons, and health services rely on such distinctions to provide safe environments for women. The absence of these definitions undermines the safety and rights of women.

As the 2026 Victorian election approaches, Family First positions itself as a defender of women’s rights in sports and other critical areas. The party’s commitment to restoring biological definitions aims to address the growing concerns among female athletes and advocates for women’s spaces across the state.
