Financial and Wellbeing Support for Industry Participants
SYDNEY — Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has announced new support packages for industry participants affected by recent changes, including the closure of several racing venues across the state. The announcement, made today, aims to assist local participants during the transition, according to GRNSW.
The closure of racing locations such as Muswellbrook and Broken Hill, scheduled by June 30, 2026, and Wagga Wagga in the subsequent year, is part of a broader rationalisation effort within the industry. GRNSW is offering financial aid and mental health support through its partnership with Sonder, a 24/7 wellbeing service. The organisation’s Participant Welfare Officer, George Zaiter, will also be available to provide assistance.
Impact on Remote Regions
GRNSW Chief Executive Officer Steve Griffin emphasised the importance of supporting those impacted by the changes. “We are very aware that changes to the racing footprint can create uncertainty and practical challenges for participants,” Griffin stated. He added that maintaining the welfare of both greyhounds and participants is a priority in ensuring the industry’s sustainable future.
Broken Hill, due to its remote location, poses unique challenges for trainers and owners. GRNSW will implement a specific financial support framework for this region to help manage the transition. This initiative aims to facilitate the continued welfare of greyhounds and the wellbeing of local participants.
