Committee to Gather Insights from Various Sectors
The Joint Standing Committee on Migration will conduct public hearings in Adelaide, Canberra, and Sydney during May 2026. These hearings aim to explore the value of skilled migration to Australia.
Until now, the committee focused on federal government agencies in Canberra. However, in May, the scope will expand to include various stakeholders such as academics, migration agents, lawyers, migrant support services, industry associations, and state government representatives.
In Adelaide, the emphasis will be on initiatives and support systems designed to promote skilled migration to South Australia. Meanwhile, the sessions in Canberra and Sydney will gather insights from experts and peak body groups representing sectors like agriculture, construction, finance, hospitality, and business.
Committee Chair Steve Georganas MP remarked, “The committee looks forward to taking evidence from a range of sectors and industries with experience in supporting and employing skilled migrants.”
The Adelaide hearing will take place on 4th May 2026, from 9.30 am to 4.00 pm ACST at the Crowne Plaza, located at 27 Frome St. In Canberra, the hearing is scheduled for 15th May 2026, from 8.30 am to 2.20 pm AEST at the Parliament House. Sydney will host its session on 19th May 2026, from 9.30 am to 4.20 pm AEST at the NSW Parliament House.
Public hearings will be broadcast live online at aph.gov.au/live. The committee also plans additional hearings across Australia in the future months, allowing more voices to be heard on this critical issue.
For those interested in the details of the inquiry and the hearing programs, more information is available on the committee’s official website. This initiative underscores the importance of skilled migration in addressing labour shortages and enhancing Australia’s economic growth.
These hearings aim to evaluate how skilled migration can support different industries and regions. The committee expects to conduct additional hearings throughout Australia in the coming months.
