Concerns Raised Over Unpaid Staff and Safety
On June 22, 2026, the Independent Education Union (IEU) demanded immediate investigations into Redeemer Baptist School in North Parramatta due to serious allegations. Reports indicate that staff are unpaid and that teachers are labelled as ‘volunteers’ instead of employees.
According to the IEU, teachers at the school are not receiving salaries consistent with enterprise agreements. These agreements ensure compensation comparable to that of NSW government school staff. In the absence of an enterprise agreement, federal awards and legislated conditions, including superannuation, should apply. The union claims that these standards are not met.
Allegations of alarming child protection issues have also emerged. Students allegedly share bedrooms with teachers, which the union considers inappropriate and unsafe.
Call for Official Probes
In response to these allegations, the IEU urged the NSW Education Standards Authority and the Office of the Childrens Guardian to investigate the school thoroughly. They also insist that the Fair Work Ombudsman evaluate the schools work arrangements for compliance with federal laws.
Carol Matthews, IEUA NSW/ACT Branch Secretary, stated, “The Fair Work Ombudsman should also closely examine the schools work arrangements to ensure federal laws have not been breached.”
The IEUA NSW/ACT Branch represents over 32,000 teachers, principals, and support staff in Catholic and independent schools, early childhood centres, and post-secondary colleges. This highlights the gravity of the allegations. The union’s call for an investigation reflects the potential impact on educational standards and staff welfare.
By demanding these investigations, the IEUA demonstrates its commitment to protecting teacher rights and ensuring safe educational environments. The outcome could have significant implications for employment practices in non-government schools.
The IEU’s actions underscore the importance of safeguarding educational and employment standards, especially in independent institutions. As this situation unfolds, many await a resolution that prioritises the welfare of educators and students alike.
