Poll Highlights Increasing Support for Clean Energy
Residents in the Illawarra region are increasingly worried about climate change and energy expenses, according to polling data released on April 28. The survey, conducted by Farmers for Climate Action, included 451 residents from Illawarra as part of a broader poll of 1,965 participants across key renewable energy zones. Completed on March 20, the poll reveals key insights into local sentiment.
The data shows that climate anxiety is driven by rising heatwaves, bushfires, and floods. Specifically, 68% of residents cited heatwaves, 66% mentioned bushfires, and 62% pointed to floods as major concerns.
Verity Morgan-Schmidt, CEO of Farmers for Climate Action, noted, “33% of those polled in Illawarra have become more concerned about climate change in the past 12 months.”
Energy Costs and Preferred Future Sources
Half of the respondents blamed energy companies for high energy bills. They also pointed to global energy price surges and coal power station breakdowns, while only 14% attributed costs to clean energy.
Looking at future energy sources, 73% of Illawarra residents viewed solar energy as crucial. Onshore and offshore wind were each favored by 46%, with 42% supporting pumped hydro. Gas and coal were preferred by 28% and 25% respectively, and nuclear energy by 26%.
Support for clean energy in Illawarra remains robust, with 68% of residents in favor. However, only 49% believed there is majority support for it in the region. Morgan-Schmidt emphasised the gap between real and perceived support, stating that media and social media algorithms often promote conflict.
Farmers for Climate Action aims to amplify regional voices, ensuring that local communities are heard in discussions about renewable energy and climate change. The poll results underscore the urgency of addressing climate concerns and transitioning to cleaner energy sources.
