Part Time, Hybrid Work from Home

Environment and Sustainability, Conservation and Land Management

Not For Profit (NFP)

Job description

About us

Trust for Nature is a not-for-profit conservation organisation that works to protect native plants and wildlife on private land. Created in 1972 under the Victorian Conservation Trust Act 1972 (Vic), Trust for Nature has a proud history of working across the government, not-for profit and private sectors to achieve permanent protection and management of important conservation land across Victoria.

We have a culture that supports and inspires conservation achievement and personal development, both within the workplace and beyond.

Our work is uniquely positioned at the interface of science and land management, supporting a network of landholders managing high-value conservation areas across diverse Victorian landscapes.

About the role

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Conservation Science, you will play a key role in administering, governing and continuously improving Trust for Nature’s GIS systems, spatial databases and analytical workflows. You will ensure GIS systems and capability are fit for purpose, while delivering spatial analyses that inform conservation science, planning, monitoring, reporting and on-ground delivery.

You will work within the state-wide science team to build GIS capability across the organisation through mentoring, technical support, and collaboration with our internal team. Your work will directly influence how conservation priorities are identified, managed, and protected across Victoria.

A key focus of the role will be developing consistent GIS training, guidance and staff support across the organisation. You will also support the roll-out of Trust for Nature’s Habitat Track monitoring program by supporting the development of data infrastructure, data management processes and analytical pipelines that turn monitoring data into practical conservation insights.

Review the attached Position Description for further details.

What’s on Offer

An ongoing part-time position at 0.8 FTE (4 days), with flexible work arrangements available. The role is based in our Melbourne CBD office and operates on a hybrid model, combining in-office days with working from home and occasional travel. The position may involve travel across Victoria to visit sites and engage with regional staff. A valid driver’s licence and a willingness to travel are essential.

The role offers a salary of $90,606 ($72,484.6 pro rata at 0.8) p.a., plus superannuation.

About you

You are an experienced GIS and spatial data professional with a balanced skillset spanning system administration, data management and applied spatial analysis. You bring technical depth, sound judgement and a collaborative approach to helping others use spatial data effectively.

The successful candidate will bring:

Tertiary qualifications in GIS, Spatial Science, Data Science, Ecology, Conservation or Geography (or a related discipline)

An understanding of conservation and land management in Victoria and experience applying GIS and data analysis in this context.

Demonstrated experience in GIS administration and analysis within environmental, land management, planning, natural resource management or other directly transferable contexts.

Advanced capability in spatial data analyses, mapping and data-driven decision support

Experience developing and implementing automated workflows, data infrastructure, or analysis pipelines for ecological, environmental, monitoring, natural resource management, or related datasets, including the use of Python, SQL, R, or similar

The ability to build and develop internal capacity in GIS skills across the organisation.

Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with experience working collaboratively across teams to deliver shared data, spatial systems and conservation outcomes.

We encourage applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds and experiences, including those who may not meet every listed criterion.

How to apply

Please submit a cover letter along with your resume via our jobs board. Applications without a personalised cover letter will not be considered.

Applications will close (EOD) on the closing date and we plan to hold interviews shortly after.
