Melbourne Star Returns With VIP Cabins And A New Look

on

New cabin interiors, a bar, café and upgraded lighting will greet visitors returning to the 120-metre Docklands wheel.

Melbourne Star will welcome passengers back on Thursday 15th October 2026, ending a 1,865-day closure with upgraded cabins and new visitor facilities.

Tickets are now on sale for the wheel at The District Docklands. Standing 120 meters tall, it offers panoramic views across Melbourne and the surrounding region.

Owners Jay and Jane Jones have overseen extensive works since taking ownership in August 2025. Changes include a bar, café and gift shop, alongside VIP cabins, new in-cabin screens and updated audio storytelling.

Skyline Attractions managing director Jay Jones said public interest had remained strong throughout preparations, with more than 7,500 people attending the return of the wheel’s lights.

“It’s been a long road getting Melbourne Star ready to welcome passengers again, but it’s been worth every minute,” Jones said.

What Has Changed Ahead Of The Reopening

Every cabin has had its clutches and motors removed, inspected and remanufactured. Air-conditioning, CCTV and intercom systems have been replaced or restored.

Fire systems have been brought back into compliance, and lift servicing arrangements are in place.

Beyond the cabins, the original lighting setup has been replaced with a network capable of full-colour animation and synchronised sequences. It allows the wheel’s lighting to be programmed for events and seasons.

Passengers will hear a fresh voiceover, with new voices contributing to the updated storytelling.

Docklands Businesses Prepare For Returning Visitors

The District Docklands precinct director Jonathan Codman said the reopening would bring more visitors to surrounding shops, restaurants and entertainment venues.

“Melbourne Star has always been one of the defining features of The District Docklands, and we’re excited to see it welcoming visitors again,” Codman said.

Lord Mayor of Melbourne Nick Reece said the reopening would support local businesses, hospitality, jobs and investment in Docklands.
