Report Highlights Consumer Call for Compensation and Price
Controls
SYDNEY — Australians are calling for affordable and reliable NBN services, according to a new report by the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN) released on March 10. The report indicates that while NBN Co‘s fibre upgrades are appreciated, affordability should not be compromised.
The report, titled ‘Future of Australia’s NBN’, was unveiled at an event in Sydney’s CBD, following extensive community and consumer consultations. It emphasises that NBN Co should compensate consumers directly for service deficiencies, rather than passing rebates through retailers.
Consumers also advocate for retail price controls to protect vulnerable users, suggesting that the Entry Level Offer should be upgraded and regularly reviewed, ensuring it remains aligned with community expectations.
Community Insights on NBN Priorities
ACCAN CEO Carol Bennett highlighted the significance of these findings, stating, “We now have a far greater understanding of what everyday Australians want from their National Broadband Network – affordable and reliable services.” She urged policymakers to heed the report’s recommendations to ensure consumer needs are met without unnecessary cost increases.
The study sheds light on regional disparities in service availability, urging a balanced distribution of resources to ensure that rural areas receive the same quality of service as urban centers. This call for equitable service is critical as more Australians rely on digital platforms for education, work, and daily activities. The future of Australia’s digital landscape, as portrayed in the report, hinges on striking a balance between technological advancements and consumer affordability.
