Youth-Driven Initiative to Support Emerging Talent
Young Australian music creators and their teachers will soon be celebrated through the Next Up Music Awards (NUMAs), launched with support from renowned artists Sia and Troye Sivan. Scheduled for 28th January 2027, the inaugural event will be held at Carriageworks in Sydney.
Milly Petriella OAM, a respected music executive, founded the NUMAs to honour emerging school-aged talent with awards and a paid Youth Intern Program. This initiative includes student internships and mentorship, designed to connect young creators with the music industry.
As the first patrons, Sia and Troye Sivan join Mahalia Barnes, who serves as Artistic Director, and DOBBY, appointed as First Nations Artistic Director. Youth Patrons Ruby Rodgers and Myka Champion will contribute significantly to shaping the program.
NUMAs will host an awards ceremony recognizing young recording artists, producers, and songwriters. The event offers a national platform through awards, live performances, and mentorship opportunities. Educators will also be honored with the Music Teacher of the Year awards, presented by Music Australia in both primary and secondary categories.
Support and Partnerships
Backed by the Australian Government’s Revive Live initiative, the NUMAs have secured partnerships with The Song Room, Carriageworks, and Music Australia. Additional partners will be announced soon, ensuring a robust foundation for the awards.
“NUMAs is not just an awards program,” Milly Petriella OAM stated. “Through paid internships, mentorship, and hands-on involvement in the event, we’re helping young people build skills, confidence, and community, whether they see their future on stage, in the studio, or behind the scenes.”
Students aged 6–18 and their music teachers can participate, with nominations and intern applications opening in June 2026 via the official website, nextupmusicawards.com. This initiative ensures inclusivity across different school levels.
NUMAs address the declining access to music education and the growing concern for the future creative workforce. With industry icons’ involvement and comprehensive support structures, the awards are poised to make a significant impact.
