<h2>New rules target methane reduction in mining industry</h2>
SYDNEY — The New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has announced new regulations requiring coal mines to reduce fossil methane emissions, effective from 2027. The move aims to mitigate one of the most potent greenhouse gases contributing to climate change. The regulations will compel mines to capture, treat, or convert methane emissions, according to the EPA.
EPA Chief Executive Officer <a href=”https://melbourne-insider.au/tag/tony-chappel/” title=”Tony Chappel” rel=”noopener”>Tony Chappel</a> stated that the measures focus on proven methods already used in parts of the industry worldwide. “Reducing fossil methane is one of the fastest ways we can limit climate impacts in the near term,” Chappel said. He emphasised that these requirements will guide the coal sector’s direction over the next decade, ensuring real emissions reductions occur on-site.
Impact and Implementation
Under the new guidelines, large underground coal mines must either flare or utilise gas with high methane concentrations, minimise leaks from old mines, and install ventilation air methane abatement technology. The EPA will review trials and collaborate with industry stakeholders to ensure safe implementation. The regulations, part of the EPA’s Climate Change <a href=”https://melbourne-insider.au/uniting-child-safe-action-plan/” title=”Action Plan” rel=”noopener”>Action Plan</a>, come as <a href=”https://melbourne-insider.au/tag/coal-mining/” title=”coal mining” rel=”noopener”>coal mining</a> accounts for 30% of NSW’s methane emissions and 11% of total greenhouse gas emissions.
The new rules will also require large emitters, including coal mines and industrial sites, to report emissions annually and outline abatement plans. Grant funding will support the development of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Plans for certain licensees. These measures align with broader industry trends towards greater transparency and accountability in emissions reporting.
