New Programs Targeting Youth in Central West Launched

BATHURST — The Panthers Foundation has partnered with the NSW Office of Sport to launch a programme aimed at addressing domestic, family, and sexual violence in the Central West region. Announced yesterday, the two-year collaboration will focus on educating teenagers through mentoring initiatives.

According to the Panthers Foundation, the Building Young Men and Empowering Young Women programmes will be instrumental in fostering empathy, accountability, and gender equality among participants. The programmes officially commenced at Denison College of Secondary Education, Bathurst High Campus.

The initiative is part of NSW’s $38 million strategy for the Prevention of Domestic, Family, and Sexual Violence 2024-2028, which seeks to tackle the root causes of violence through community engagement.

Community Impact and Government Support

Minister for Sport Steve Kamper highlighted the role of sporting organisations in curbing violence, stating, “Sport is part of the fabric of communities across NSW and can influence behaviour and change perceptions.” Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Jodie Harrison added, “Local sporting clubs are crucial in promoting respect, healthy relationships, and gender equality.”

The partnership underscores the importance of community involvement in preventing violence, with Stephen Lawrence, Duty MLC for Bathurst, emphasizing the Panthers’ influence in the region. Alex Reilly, Head of Foundation and Community at Panthers Foundation, expressed gratitude for government support, noting the programs’ potential for real growth among participants.

As the Panthers Foundation expands its outreach from Penrith to Bathurst, the collaboration serves as a model for other regions aiming to address domestic violence proactively. The continued investment in these programmes signifies a commitment to long-term change, encouraging other communities to adopt similar strategies for combating domestic violence and fostering safer environments.
