Committee to Enhance Defence Scrutiny
Commencing its oversight role, the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Defence (PJCD) is focusing on Defence policy, capability development, and administration in Australia. On 12th May, the inaugural meeting marked the beginning of its mandate to ensure effective and strategic outcomes.
Senator Deborah O’Neill was elected as the Chair during this meeting, with Senator Dave Sharma appointed as Deputy Chair. Aiming to provide bipartisan scrutiny, the committee will oversee national defence agencies such as the Department of Defence, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, and the Australian Submarine Agency.
“Australia is contending with the most complex and demanding strategic environment that it has faced in decades,” stated Senator Deborah O’Neill. “Every Australian has a stake in the success of our resilience, preparedness and capabilities.”
Committee’s Strategic Role
With the ability to obtain private briefings from relevant agencies, the PJCD ensures proper parliamentary oversight without compromising national security. This enhanced role is designed to keep the Australian public informed about defence investments and the opportunities they create in skilled jobs and business growth.
Senator Dave Sharma highlighted the committee’s work, saying, “There is no more important role for the Parliament than protecting the security, interests and way of life of the Australian people, and defending Australia’s sovereignty and national freedoms.”
As the strategic environment deteriorates, characterised by increasing risks and uncertainty, the committee’s role becomes even more crucial. Enhancing Australia’s national preparedness and strengthening its defence capabilities are key tasks.
Cooperation from Defence and its portfolio agencies is expected as the PJCD embarks on its new oversight responsibilities. The committee plans to work constructively and in the public interest, emphasising long-term effectiveness in defence strategy.
