Union Criticises Peabody's Lockout Decision

On June 16th, Peabody initiated a two-week lockout of workers at the United Wambo Washery. This action escalates an Enterprise Agreement dispute ongoing since early May. Workers have been engaged in protected industrial action after rejecting a proposal that included annual wage increases of 2.5 per cent and reduced bonus arrangements.

Robin Williams, President of the Mining and Energy Union Northern Mining and NSW Energy District, expressed his discontent with Peabody's response. He stated, “There’s very little between the parties and this dispute could have been settled weeks ago.”

Workers Demand Fair Compensation

Williams emphasised the workers' rejection of the offer, arguing that it does not align with industry standards. “Mining workers across the industry are securing significantly better outcomes than what this multinational originally put on the table,” he said.

He further criticised Peabody's decision, saying, “Instead of reaching an agreement, they've chosen to shut workers out of their workplace and put additional pressure on local families.”

The union remains open to negotiations, with Williams reiterating, “Our members remain united and ready to reach a fair agreement. The question is whether Peabody is.”

Williams added that the lockout confirmed Peabody's preference for prolonging the dispute instead of resolving it. “If Peabody wanted this dispute settled, it could be settled,” he said.

According to Williams, workers are justified in their stance as they are aware of the value they create and believe they deserve a fair share. The union leader highlighted that securing better terms is a common achievement for mining workers across the industry.

The lockout affects not only the workers but also their families, adding to the pressure on the local community. As negotiations continue, the workers remain steadfast in their demands for equitable treatment and compensation.
