Choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa Leads the Project

Queensland Ballet, in collaboration with HOTA, Home of the Arts, has announced the world premiere of ‘Elegantly Wasted’, a new contemporary ballet set to the music of INXS. The ballet will debut at HOTA on the Gold Coast from 10th to 12th September 2026.

This 65-minute production is the work of renowned Belgium-Colombian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, alongside sound designer Jake Rodriguez, costume designer Josh McIntosh, and set and lighting designer Jon Buswell.

Lopez Ochoa, known for her previous success with Queensland Ballet’s ‘Coco Chanel: the Life of a Fashion Icon’, expressed her excitement at the prospect of reinterpreting INXS’s music through dance. “INXS is one of Australia’s most successful musical exports, so I was naturally drawn to the idea of collaboration between what many might consider the most unlikely of partners,” she said.

INXS’s Enduring Influence

The ballet, set in a luxurious hotel lobby, explores themes of identity and connection amidst the allure of social media. Andrew Farriss, founding member and composer of INXS, remarked on the collaboration, stating, “This ballet is a fresh artistic interpretation that stands in its own space. It’s not about the band’s story but shows how our music can inspire new forms of expression.”

Queensland Ballet’s Executive Director, Dilshani Weerasinghe, highlighted the significance of the partnership with HOTA and Experience Gold Coast, saying it provides a unique environment for experimentation and contemporary storytelling. The partnership aims to engage new audiences and expand the cultural offerings of the Gold Coast.

Performances of ‘Elegantly Wasted’ are scheduled for 10th September at 7:00pm, 11th September at 7:30pm, and 12th September with shows at 1:30pm and 7:30pm. The ballet will be accompanied by educational workshops, enhancing community engagement with the arts.

INXS was recently awarded the Ted Albert Award at the 2026 APRA Awards for their outstanding service to Australian music. This recognition adds to their impressive record, which includes 75 million albums sold worldwide and numerous accolades such as seven US Top 10 singles, six APRA Music Awards, ARIAs, two Brit Awards, MTV Awards, and Grammy nominations.
