New Partnership with K2 Space to Boost Satellite Capacity

LUXEMBOURG — SES has announced a strategic partnership with K2 Space to launch its next-generation medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellite network, meoSphere, by 2030. The initiative aims to enhance global broadband capacity and data speeds.

The collaboration involves the development of 28 high-power satellite platforms by K2 Space, which will be integrated with SES’s software-defined payloads. This marks the first phase of the meoSphere rollout, designed to optimise satellite production and control supply-chain elements, SES confirmed this week.

The meoSphere network promises to improve connectivity across government, mobility, and telecommunications markets by leveraging advances in satellite and networking technologies. Adel Al-Saleh, CEO of SES, emphasised that the project will function as critical infrastructure, supporting secure and resilient networks worldwide.

Innovative Satellite Technology

The meoSphere satellites will orbit at approximately 8,000 kilometers above Earth, offering benefits like low latency and efficient geographic coverage. The network will support multiple missions and integrate with existing sovereign networks, serving diverse customer needs in the space economy.

In the coming years, SES plans a series of MEO “pathfinder” missions to test and validate the satellite systems, with each mission increasing in complexity to refine operational concepts. The company aims to mitigate financial risks by maintaining a dual supply chain approach, enhancing resilience against potential constraints.

This announcement follows an industry trend of increasing demand for advanced satellite networks to meet the growing needs of commercial and defence sectors. SES’s meoSphere network is expected to be compatible with Europe’s IRIS2 programme, further cementing its role in the global satellite infrastructure.
