Programme Aims to Enhance Carer Wellbeing and Education
ADELAIDE — The South Australian Labour Party has announced funding for a Dementia Carers Wellbeing and Education Program, a move welcomed by Dementia Australia. The initiative, set to run for 12 months, aims to assist unpaid carers with evidence-based interventions.
According to Professor Tanya Buchanan, CEO of Dementia Australia, the programme will help approximately 800 carers across metropolitan and regional areas of South Australia. It includes wellbeing strategies and immersive experiences using virtual reality to simulate the perspective of dementia patients.
Programme Details and Impact
The programme consists of one-day sessions focused on stress reduction and self-care, coupled with the Educational Dementia Immersive Experience workshops. “Support provided early can lead to better outcomes for carers and those they care for,” Buchanan said.
With dementia as the leading cause of death in Australia and over 35,800 people living with the condition in South Australia, this initiative addresses a critical need. The announcement follows a trend of increasing support for carers nationwide, with an estimated 1.7 million Australians involved in dementia care.
This new programme is part of a broader effort by the government to enhance the support structure available to those caring for dementia patients. By collaborating with healthcare professionals, the programme seeks to provide comprehensive educational resources. the government has allocated additional funds to research and develop more advanced tools and techniques that can aid carers in their daily routines.
Community involvement is also a key aspect of the program, with local organisations and volunteers encouraged to participate in creating a more supportive environment for carers. This holistic approach ensures that carers are not only equipped with the necessary skills but also have access to a network of support and resources. The program’s focus on innovative technology and community engagement highlights its commitment to improving the quality of life for both carers and those living with dementia.
