First 100K Customers Transitioned in Q1 2026

Telefónica Germany achieved a milestone by transitioning 100,000 customers to Mavenir’s cloud-native IMS technology on Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud. This achievement, announced on 18th May 2026, marks the first instance in Europe where a mobile operator has accomplished such a feat with production subscribers in a public cloud.

The migration is part of a multi-year project aimed at transforming both fixed and mobile IMS networks. Telefónica Germany completed the move from Mavenir’s virtualized IMS to the cloud-native platform in the first quarter of 2026. This initiative is under a multi-year contract extension with Mavenir, initially announced in February 2025.

Matthias Sauder, who leads Technology & Unified Connectivity at Telefónica Germany, commented, “This milestone marks a pivotal stage in transitioning our core network and telecom workloads to public cloud infrastructure. Telefónica Germany’s cloud strategy is built on our firm belief in agility, transparency, and advanced automation.”

Comprehensive Automation Framework

Mavenir and Telefónica Germany are collaborating to create a comprehensive automation framework. This framework is expected to streamline operations and expedite the delivery of new features and updates. The full migration of several million mobile customers is scheduled for completion by the end of next year, with all sites set to utilise automation.

Brandon Larson, SVP & General Manager, Cloud, AI & IMS Business Strategy at Mavenir, remarked, “Forward-thinking operators are embracing cloud technologies to prepare for an AI-native, fully automated future. This transition demonstrates Telefónica Germany’s clear leadership in that journey.”

As part of their cloud-native IMS solution, Mavenir supports voice over LTE, voice over New Radio, and voice over Wi-Fi on a unified IMS core. Designed for cloud environments, it allows operators to rapidly innovate and introduce new services. By the end of 2026, Mavenir plans to migrate a few million more customers to the new solution running on AWS Cloud.

Mavenir is recognised for building cloud-native, AI-by-design mobile networks, which enable operators like Telefónica Germany to transition beyond traditional network models. The ongoing transformation is expected to unlock new levels of efficiency, innovation, and monetization opportunities for the years ahead.

Following the successful transition of the first 100,000 subscribers, Mavenir and Telefónica Germany will continue the migration throughout 2026. This effort is part of their broader strategy to modernise network infrastructure using advanced cloud technology.
