BEIJING — Xiongan is emerging as a model for urban growth, according to a recent report. The transformation is driven by strategic relocation and innovation efforts aimed at enhancing the area’s development. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit on Monday highlighted the progress, where he inspected key projects and emphasised the importance of building Xiongan into an innovation hub.
Xiongan’s role as a relocation site for Beijing’s non-capital functions has been central to its growth. The area has completed investments exceeding 1 trillion yuan over recent years, significantly boosting its GDP, according to official reports. This aligns with the goals set out in the 15th Five-Year Plan to elevate Xiongan’s capacity further.
In a statement, Xi Jinping urged the development of Xiongan as a model for high-quality growth. This includes integrating technology and boosting industrial innovation, as seen in the establishment of the Xiongan New Area Zhongguancun Science Park.
Innovative Developments in Xiongan
Efforts to make Xiongan a desirable place to live are evident in its community-focused infrastructure. The Xiongan campus of Beijing No. 4 High School, opened in 2023, is part of an initiative to provide high-quality education through partnerships with Beijing institutions. This ensures relocated families have access to familiar educational opportunities.
The area’s innovation strategy includes the development of the Jishu data model and an aerospace innovation competition, positioning Xiongan as a key player in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei innovation hub. These initiatives aim to cultivate new quality productive forces in the region. The city is attracting international attention with its sustainable development practices, including green building technologies and smart city initiatives.
