The 29th Australian National Dragon Boat Championship concluded on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, from April 18 to 23, 2026. Nearly 3,000 athletes from 77 club teams gathered to compete in this prestigious event. This championship, jointly organized by the Australian Dragon Boat Federation and the Queensland Dragon Boat Association, is Australia’s leading annual dragon boat competition.

In attendance were notable figures such as Rosanna Natoli, Mayor of the Sunshine Coast; Peter Campos, President of the Australian Dragon Boat Federation; Jarrod Bleijie, Deputy Premier of Queensland; Blair Gamble, President of the Queensland Dragon Boat Association; and Luo Zhongyi, President of the International Ice Dragon Boat Federation.

The event featured a diverse range of categories, including elite, youth, senior, breast cancer survivor, cancer survivor, and para dragon boat divisions, catering to participants aged 10 to over 80. A total of 370 thrilling races were contested, showcasing high-level competitive performance.

As Australia’s sole qualifying event for the IDBF Club World Dragon Boat Championships, the championship selected national team members based on scores from races across four official distances: 200m, 500m, 1000m, and 2000m. The competition standards were exceptional, with participants striving to secure their spots on the national team.

Champion International, an official partner, collaborated closely with event organizers to ensure a professional, fair, and efficient racing environment. Over the six-day competition, the sound of pounding drumbeats and the sight of flying paddles filled the air as teams raced through the waves, each contest a testament to the athletes’ dedication and teamwork.

The championship not only highlighted inclusiveness and public welfare but also promoted the popularity of dragon boat sports across Australia. Athletes of various ages and backgrounds united on the water, showcasing the unique cohesive power of dragon boat culture that transcends national and cultural boundaries.

As a result, dragon boating continues to grow in popularity, attracting more participants each year. The event underscored the importance of inclusiveness and community spirit, fully embodying the sport’s philosophy of universal participation and healthy living.
