Celebrating 14 Million International Links

Global Australians has launched an initiative to celebrate the 14 million connections linking Australia globally, recognising these as a strategic asset for the nation’s future. The initiative highlights the diversity and international ties that enhance Australia’s competitiveness.

Australia’s global connections are built through the experiences of over one million Australians currently living overseas and more than four million who have returned. Over 50% of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was.

Kate McQuestin, CEO of Global Australians, emphasised the importance of these connections. She stated, “Australia’s diversity is one of our greatest strengths. Our global connections are built through millions of people with different backgrounds, cultures, experiences and perspectives who all contribute to shaping modern Australia.”

Stories of Ambition and Success

The initiative will feature stories of 14 Australians who exemplify the power of global connections in fields such as science, technology, medicine, and the arts. These stories aim to inspire and demonstrate the unique advantages of Australia’s international network.

Notable individuals include Dr Margaret Simonian, who arrived in Australia as a child refugee from Iraq and went on to advance medical knowledge globally, and Tushar Apte, a music producer whose journey reflects the impact of mentorship and global opportunities.

Over 14 days, Global Australians will share these stories, showcasing the experiences, mentors, communities, and moments that have shaped their journeys. This initiative shines a light on the role these connections play in strengthening Australia’s future prosperity and competitiveness.

The initiative comes as Australia seeks to enhance its international competitiveness. Research by Global Australians indicates that 75% of Australians living abroad wish to contribute to the nation’s future, highlighting the potential of these global ties.

By uniting Australians worldwide, the initiative aims to harness this network for the benefit of the nation, fostering collaboration and innovation that can drive Australia’s future prosperity.

Global Australians believe that behind every connection is a story, a mentor who opened a door, or a community that offered support. This initiative is a celebration of the Australian spirit and the extraordinary stories behind these connections.
