Pas de Deux in Paradise Returns
The Australian Ballet made a return to Hamilton Island for its renowned Pas de Deux in Paradise series, held from 15th to 19th May 2026 at Pebble Beach, qualia.
This biennial event unfolded against the stunning backdrop of the Whitsundays and the Coral Sea, offering a unique outdoor ballet experience. Attendees witnessed excerpts from David McAllister’s The Sleeping Beauty, Flames of Paris, Grand Pas Classique, and Mikhail Fokine’s The Dying Swan.
Celebrated Principal Artists Sharni Spencer and Davi Ramos, along with Soloists Marko Juusela and Samara Merrick, delivered mesmerizing performances at this exclusive event, under the artistic direction of David Hallberg.
Filming the Performance
For the first time, this year's Pas de Deux in Paradise was captured on film, enhancing the interaction of movement, landscape, and light. David Hallberg remarked, "In a theatre, everything is controlled. Here, the Reef, the Whitsundays and the shifting light become part of the work."
Beyond performances, the event offered masterclasses led by Hallberg and renowned choreographer Stephanie Lake, providing guests with deep insights into the creative process of ballet.
Rebecca Hamey, General Manager of qualia, emphasised, "At qualia, we’re interested in experiences that connect guests to the reef through culture and creativity, not just place."
Guests savored not just the ballet, but also a bespoke dining experience. They participated in rehearsals, barre classes, and beginner ballet sessions, enriching their cultural journey.
Situated on Hamilton Island’s northern-most tip, qualia continues to evolve its offerings by integrating the natural beauty of the Great Barrier Reef with immersive cultural experiences.
This event, held every two years, forms part of a longstanding partnership between qualia and The Australian Ballet, now spanning almost two decades. It continues to attract a loyal following, showcasing the precision and athleticism of the company against one of Australia’s most picturesque landscapes.
