South Australian Wines Make History in France
ADELAIDE — Australian Chardonnay has secured a place among the world’s best, with Taylors Wines achieving two top 10 spots at the 2026 Chardonnay du Monde competition in Burgundy, France. This marks the first time a Southern Hemisphere producer has accomplished this feat, according to Taylors Wines.
The prestigious event, held annually in March, featured 471 entries from 25 countries. Taylors Jaraman Chardonnay 2025 and Special Release Chardonnay 2024 stood out among elite competitors, drawing attention to the evolving reputation of Australian Chardonnay.
Resurgence of Australian Chardonnay
The achievement highlights a resurgence in Australian Chardonnay, now the nation’s top-selling white wine over $200. Angus Hughson, wine critic and Australian Editor for VINOUS, noted the shift towards precision and freshness in Australian wines. “Results like this, judged in Burgundy, again show the quality of Australian Chardonnay,” he said.
Mitchell Taylor, Chairman of Taylors Wines, emphasised the significance of the recognition. “To be acknowledged among the world’s best in Burgundy is incredibly significant,” he stated. The Jaraman Chardonnay 2025, retailing at AU$28, has already won seven major international awards, underscoring Taylors’ consistent excellence.
The announcement comes as global demand for high-quality, diverse wines continues to rise, positioning Australian Chardonnay as a key player on the international stage.
Experts believe that the success of Taylors Wines at such a notable event will encourage more Australian wineries to innovate and strive for excellence. This achievement also reflects the broader trends in the wine industry, where consumers are increasingly appreciating the unique qualities of wines from different regions, including Australia. The recognition from Chardonnay du Monde not only boosts the prestige of Taylors Wines but also highlights the potential for Australian wines to excel in global markets, paving the way for future successes.
With this recognition, Taylors Wines hopes to inspire other Australian winemakers to continue developing their craft and to aim for international acclaim. The success at the competition serves as a testament to the quality and potential of Australian Chardonnay, proving that with dedication and innovation, Australian wines can compete on the world stage.
