Lecture to Address Dementia and End-of-Life Care

Australians are being urged to engage in meaningful discussions about end-of-life care as National Palliative Care Week 2026 commences. The event focuses on addressing critical questions surrounding palliative care, with a special lecture scheduled for 14 May.

A highlight of the week is the lecture titled 'Rethinking Dementia and End-of-Life Care', delivered by Dr. Michael Chapman, Director of Palliative Care at Canberra Health Services. The session will explore new approaches to dementia, now a leading cause of death in Australia.

Dr. Chapman aims to challenge traditional views on dementia and propose ways to enhance end-of-life care. The lecture aligns with this year's theme, 'Getting to the heart of it: Big Questions. Real Answers.', emphasizing the importance of open dialogue and practical support.

According to Dr. Chapman, communities need to engage in more honest conversations and offer practical support to improve the quality of life for individuals with dementia. This approach not only protects dignity but also fosters connection.

Expanding Access to Palliative Care

Following the lecture, a discussion between Dr. Chapman and Dr. Peter Allcroft, Chair of Palliative Care Australia, will address the urgent need for improved access to palliative care services across the nation.

The event will take place at Level 2, Dame Dorothy Tangney Alcove, Parliament House Canberra, and will also be available via livestream. Media representatives are advised to arrive by 12.15 pm for the session starting at 12.30 pm.

Dr. Chapman and Dr. Allcroft will also explore how palliative care can be made more accessible and discuss the role of families and caregivers in supporting those at the end of their lives.

Interviews with Dr. Chapman or Dr. Allcroft can be arranged through Greg Kimball, Communications Manager at Palliative Care Australia. More details on National Palliative Care Week are available on their website.

National Palliative Care Week aims to highlight the importance of person-centred care that enhances the quality of life, ensuring that people with terminal conditions receive compassionate and appropriate support.
