Luke Hodge Resigns Over Betting Links

The AFL is under renewed scrutiny for its ties with the gambling industry as four-time premiership player Luke Hodge resigns from the All-Australian selection panel due to his connection with a major betting agency.

The Alliance for Gambling Reform’s Chief Advocate, Tim Costello, highlighted ongoing conflicts of interest within the AFL, stating that the league’s relationship with gambling companies undermines the sport’s integrity and exposes children to excessive gambling advertisements.

Rev. Costello remarked, “This is just another chapter in a litany of the code’s conflict of interests with gambling companies. It is extremely disappointing but not surprising.”

Concerns Over Gambling Influence

Alliance advocate Mark Kempster expressed concerns about the prevalence of gambling advertisements in AFL games. Recent reports have revealed that AFL umpires and media personalities are working for gambling firms, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest.

Kempster noted that the Gold Coast Suns employ a licensed bookmaker as their Team Manager, a position granting access to sensitive club information. Despite these issues, the AFL has yet to take action.

Kempster stated, “Unfortunately, the AFL have not acted on any of the above cases,” adding that gambling companies have ended relationships where integrity concerns were identified.

A recent survey revealed that over 75% of AFL fans want gambling ads removed from the sport, marking it as the second biggest issue for fans. Rev. Costello urged the AFL to reconsider its ties to the gambling industry, questioning if the financial benefits justify the harm caused.

In the past two months, media reports have revealed AFL umpires working for gambling companies and media identities voting on the Norm Smith Medal while employed by the gambling industry. These incidents highlight ongoing integrity issues within the league.

Although gambling companies have recognised these integrity issues and ended certain relationships, the AFL has not taken similar steps. Kempster remains concerned, specifically about the Gold Coast Suns’ Team Manager, who continues to work in a position of influence despite potential conflicts of interest.

Costello emphasised that the AFL and the gambling industry have become intrinsically linked. He argues that the game is now beholden to the financial gains from gambling, which compromises its integrity.
