CDU Initiates DNA Library for NT Biodiversity

Enhancing Species Monitoring with eDNA

On 5th June 2026, Charles Darwin University launched a groundbreaking DNA library project to support biodiversity monitoring in the Northern Territory. This initiative aims to enhance species identification using environmental DNA (eDNA) technology, allowing scientists to track and study species without directly observing or disturbing them.

The project is a collaboration between CDU, the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, and the Northern Territory Government’s Department of Lands, Planning and Environment, which funded the initiative. A high-quality DNA sequence reference library linked to museum voucher specimens is being created as part of the project.

Professor Maxine Piggott, leading the project at CDU, explained that the library will significantly reduce misidentification risks in eDNA monitoring. It incorporates genomic data from fish monitoring across NT catchments, featuring species like the exquisite rainbowfish and black banded rainbowfish. This approach is crucial for accurate biodiversity surveying.

Project Collaboration and Impact

The library includes 142 fish, 22 reptiles, 23 crustaceans, one bivalve, and one mammal species. It aids eDNA monitoring across various ecosystems, including key programmes like the Adelaide River water resource assessment and Beetaloo Basin environmental monitoring.

Dr. Michael Hammer and Dr. Kirsti Abbott from MAGNT emphasise the importance of museum specimens in creating robust and accurate reference libraries. Dr. Hammer noted that many freshwater fishes are challenging to identify, and the data set reflects extensive research into local taxonomy.

This initiative exemplifies the benefits of collaboration between research, government, and museum sectors in fostering biodiversity monitoring in the region. By linking museum specimens with genomic data, the project provides a foundation for future monitoring efforts in the Northern Territory.

The eDNA library will facilitate monitoring across surface water and groundwater ecosystems. It supports priority programmes in the Adelaide River and Beetaloo Basin. Professor Piggott mentioned, “This approach significantly reduces the risk of misidentification, a key challenge in eDNA monitoring.”

The collaboration among CDU, MAGNT, and DLPE brings together field expertise, laboratory science, and curated collections to create a vital resource for biodiversity monitoring in the Northern Territory for years to come.
