Hiking Event Benefits Beyond Blue Services
Coastrek, an annual hiking event on the Sunshine Coast, is set to take place on 17th July, raising funds for Beyond Blues mental health services. Participants can choose distances of 20km, 30km, or 50km. Registration closes on 7th June.
Demand for Beyond Blue9s 24/7 Support Service has increased by 12% over the past year. Funds from Coastrek provide essential resources for mental health support. Donations can be made at www.coastrek.com.au/donate.
Beyond Blue offers immediate support via phone, email, and webchat. Their 24/7 service reaches over 800 people daily, with someone seeking help every two minutes. This highlights the critical need for accessible mental health services.
Brisbane resident and Coastrek Ambassador Peta O9Brien found solace in the event after losing her sister. “I started walking to clear my head,” O9Brien said, explaining how Beyond Blue helped her through grief.
Personal Stories of Resilience
Sandi Gerschwitz, a Sunshine Coast mother diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson9s disease, is preparing for her fifth Coastrek. The event helps her manage both physical and mental health challenges.
Movement specialists highlight the importance of exercise for conditions like Parkinson9s. “Every step counts,” Gerschwitz explained, noting that Coastrek motivates her to stay active. Her journey includes preparing for a 125km hike to Everest Base Camp.
Georgie Harman AO, CEO of Beyond Blue, emphasised the importance of early support. “Too often, people delay reaching out,” Harman remarked, thanking participants like O9Brien and Gerschwitz for their contributions.
Coastrek Founder Di Westaway OAM explained the event’s role in promoting mental health through nature and movement. “It helps people feel better, build resilience, and stay well,” Westaway said.
