Public Hearing Set for 5th May 2026
On Tuesday, 5th May 2026, the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Employment, Workplace Relations, Skills and Training will conduct a public hearing. This event aims to explore business perspectives on the National Employment Standards (NES) in Western Sydney. Originally referred to the Committee on 27th November 2025 by the Hon Amanda Rishworth MP, Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, the inquiry seeks to evaluate the operation and adequacy of the NES, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses.
The Committee will convene at the Warwick Farm Holiday Inn in Sydney, from 9:00am to 12:00pm. the hearing will be accessible online via a live broadcast at aph.gov.au/live. Insights from business owners about their experiences with the NES will be gathered. The objective is to assess if the NES system functions effectively and remains accessible to all business sizes.
Dr Carina Garland MP, the Committee Chair, emphasised, “As the nature of work continues to evolve, it’s important that the National Employment Standards are clear and navigable for employers and workers alike.” The hearing will help identify areas of uncertainty and highlight opportunities to streamline the NES framework.
Participating Organisations
Several organisations will present evidence, including the Australian Industry Group, Business Council for Sustainable Development Australia, and Martha Travis People Innovators. A panel of local small businesses and Youth Law Australia will also provide their insights.
By gathering evidence from both government stakeholders and employee groups, the Committee aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the NES’s practical operation. This hearing will focus on the business sector’s experiences, seeking to enhance the framework’s clarity and efficiency.
