Public Art and Research Projects Open for Submissions
North Sydney Council has introduced three exciting creative opportunities for artists, with submissions now open for public art installations, research-led projects, and gallery exhibitions. These initiatives, announced on 13th May, aim to enrich the artistic landscape of the area and foster community engagement.
A call for artists is underway for a permanent public artwork at the newly revamped Young Street Plaza in Neutral Bay. Creatives are encouraged to submit site-responsive concepts that harmonize with the plaza's features, including its concrete walls and central pergola. This project is part of the Council’s broader effort to enhance village centers and improve public spaces.
The Notable Women of North Sydney initiative is seeking expressions of interest for its research-led creative project. This stage invites artists to delve into the history and contributions of women who have influenced North Sydney, with potential outcomes such as publications, performances, or public activations. This multi-year campaign began on International Women's Day earlier this year and continues to celebrate both historical and contemporary female figures.
Artists with experience in research, storytelling, and community engagement are particularly encouraged to apply, as the selected proposal will be realized in stage three by 2027. The initiative aims to highlight the impactful roles women have played in the community.
Gallery Exhibition Partner Needed
The Council is also on the lookout for a gallery exhibition partner to collaborate on showcasing artists from its Creative Studios Program. This partnership will deliver at least two exhibitions between June 2026 and July 2027, providing professional exhibition opportunities for both emerging and established artists working across diverse contemporary practices.
A suitable gallery space should be accessible, open regularly to the public, and equipped to present various art forms, including 2D, 3D, installation, and audio-visual works. In return, the Council will offer project funding, support for exhibition openings, public programs, and co-branded promotion, while recognizing the partner as an official Council exhibition partner.
Interested parties can apply for the Young Street Plaza public art and the Notable Women project through the North Sydney Council website. Applications for the gallery exhibition partner are also available online. Artists and organisations based in North Sydney are strongly encouraged to participate in shaping the cultural landscape of their community.
