José Ramos-Horta Recognised for Regional Contributions

Charles Darwin University (CDU) has awarded Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta an Honorary Doctorate of Letters. This award recognises his efforts in strengthening international relationships and enhancing regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.

President Ramos-Horta accepted the honorary degree while joining over 730 CDU graduates on stage to receive their awards this week. The accolade acknowledges his significant contributions to bridging local knowledge with global responsibilities.

Expressing gratitude, President Ramos-Horta said, "I have the honour to acknowledge the decision of Charles Darwin University to confer upon me an Honorary Doctorate, and I accept this distinction with deep humility and sincere gratitude."

Recognising a Nobel Laureate

José Ramos-Horta, a Nobel Peace Laureate, has been a pivotal figure in Timor-Leste's diplomatic efforts for more than four decades. His work has focused on advancing peace and reconciliation in East Timor, earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996 alongside Bishop Carlos Belo.

During the long struggle for independence, Ramos-Horta acted as a political representative, bringing international attention to the voices and experiences of the Timorese people. His advocacy played a crucial role in Timor-Leste's path to independence.

CDU Interim Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Fiona Coulson praised Ramos-Horta's leadership, noting, "Throughout his leadership roles as President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and international statesman, José Ramos-Horta has consistently championed the role of universities, scholars, and future leaders in strengthening democratic institutions."

Professor Coulson also highlighted that the honorary degree reflects CDU's commitment to fostering opportunities and acknowledges its longstanding connection with Timor-Leste. The university aims to encourage further cooperation across Northern Australia and the Indo-Pacific region.

CDU's recognition of President Ramos-Horta is a tribute not only to his personal journey but also to the resilience and aspirations of the people of Timor-Leste in their enduring pursuit of peace, reconciliation, and development.
