Hearings to Explore Programme Impact in Indo-Pacific
On Thursday, 7th May, and Friday, 8th May 2026, the Foreign Affairs and Aid Subcommittee of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade will conduct public hearings. These hearings are part of their inquiry into the role of Australia’s international development programme in preventing conflict.
The Chair of the Subcommittee, Hon Tim Watts MP, highlighted the significance of these hearings. He mentioned that stakeholders would share insights on how Australia’s development programme contributes to conflict prevention, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected contexts across the Indo-Pacific.
“Australia’s development programme plays a critical role in preventing conflict and supporting peace and stability in our region,” stated Hon Tim Watts MP. He added, “These hearings will provide valuable insights into what works on the ground, where the challenges lie, and how Australia can strengthen its approach to conflict prevention.”
Details of the Upcoming Hearings
Throughout the two days, evidence will be presented by Australian Government agencies, international and Australian non-government organisations, multilateral institutions, academics, and development practitioners with experience in conflict-affected settings. Representatives from these diverse groups will address the complex challenges faced in conflict zones.
The hearings will take place both virtually and in Committee Room 1R4 at Parliament House, Canberra. On Thursday, 7th May, sessions will run from 9.00 am to 1.15 pm AEST, and on Friday, 8th May, from 9.00 am to 12.45 pm AEST. All proceedings will be broadcast live at aph.gov.au/live.
Following these initial hearings, the Subcommittee anticipates holding further public sessions during May and June. These will continue to explore the effectiveness and challenges of Australia’s development initiatives in conflict prevention. The ongoing sessions aim to refine strategies and policies that maximise the impact of aid programs.
