Petit Crenn will open on Collins Street in October, marking the three-Michelin-starred chef’s first Australian venue.

Dominique Crenn’s first Australian venue will serve an all-day French bistro menu from October, with coffee, pastries and cocktails alongside a five-person standing table overlooking the kitchen.

A 40-seat French bistro will open at 495 Collins Street in Melbourne this October, becoming chef Dominique Crenn’s first Australian venue.

Petit Crenn, a partnership with Salter Brothers, will serve coffee and pastries in the morning, followed by lunches and an all-day menu of French classics. Cocktails will be available from the afternoon into the evening.

Steak tartare with egg yolk jam and sauce au poivre will feature alongside a croque madame with jambon and gruyère. Seasonal tartines and composed salads are also planned.

A changing plat du jour will include dishes such as French ravioli with onion consommé and moules with preserved lemon and beurre de baratte. Caviar will feature in a signature dish.

Crenn is the chef and co-owner of San Francisco’s three-Michelin-starred Atelier Crenn. In 2018, she became the first female chef in the United States to be awarded three Michelin stars.

Her Melbourne venue draws inspiration from Paris comptoirs and a French bistro approach shaped by childhood memories, seasonality, and simplicity.

“Petit Crenn comes from my own life, from the cafes in France where you can sit for five minutes or five hours and always feel welcome,” Crenn said.

Brittany shapes the design

Crenn has designed the venue with support from Salter Brothers’ design team, drawing on the landscapes and coastline of Brittany, her home region in France. Natural materials will feature throughout the space.

At the rear of the restaurant, a standing table called Le Contour will accommodate five people and give guests a view of the kitchen.

Petit Crenn will be located at 495 Collins Street, Melbourne.
