Collaborative Efforts to Shape Future Grid

The RACE for 2030 Consumer Grid Summit will bring energy sector leaders and innovators together in Sydney on the 24th and 25th of June to discuss the future of Australia’s energy system. This inaugural event aims to supercharge the energy transformation.

An intentionally diverse group of 40 delegates, including representatives from government, regulatory bodies, networks, retailers, technology companies, and consumer advocacy groups, will attend the summit. This diverse participation ensures a variety of perspectives and expertise.

Key organisations participating include the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, The Environment and Water, Australian Energy Market Commission, Australian Energy Market Operator, and Energy Consumers Australia. Major players like Tesla, Ausgrid, and CSIRO will contribute their insights.

Dr Bill Lilley, CEO of RACE for 2030, emphasised the importance of breaking down traditional barriers in the sector. He said, “More than 100 current and emerging leaders told us that the siloed nature of the energy sector remains one of the biggest barriers to accelerating the energy transformation equitably.”

Facilitated by broadcaster Craig Reucassel, the summit will feature sessions led by Prof Chris Riedy from the UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures, Mark Paterson from Catalyst Energy, and Dr Bill Lilley himself. This lineup promises impactful discussions and actionable outcomes.

Focus on Consumer Benefits

The summit aims to create practical steps towards a future grid that benefits all consumers. Insights from the event will be compiled into a final report to guide the next phase of energy transition, ensuring that consumer needs remain a priority.

Lotte Wolf, Executive Manager of Energy Policy at Energy Consumers Australia, stated, “Consumers already play a central role in the energy transition, but many face real barriers to participate.” This highlights the need for inclusive strategies.

Tim Jordan, Commissioner at the Australian Energy Market Commission, noted that the event presents a rare opportunity to take a more integrated approach to the challenges facing the energy sector. By fostering collaboration, the summit seeks to address interconnected challenges.

Following the summit’s conclusion, a comprehensive report will be produced. This report will serve as a practical reference for stakeholders, encapsulating the shared visions and steps identified during the two-day event.

The summit is expected to set a precedent for future collaborations, encouraging ongoing engagement among stakeholders. As the energy sector evolves, such initiatives are crucial for ensuring a sustainable and equitable transition.
