CRAPBOX
Two short plays about love, loss, reconciliation and acceptance.
Hosted by Theatre Works
About this event
We know a good night out in St Kilda doesn’t have to be loud or flashy. CRAPBOX is a double bill of short plays that digs into the humour and heartbreak of everyday life, giving us a glimpse into the quiet struggles and small victories we all recognise. If you like your theatre honest and a bit raw, this one’s for you.
Two short plays about love, loss, reconciliation and acceptance.
Kevin Nemeth has shaped his domestic and everyday material into delicate, profound and gently funny explorations of human nature. Set in regional Victoria, Crapbox is narrated by a recently widowed man who has discovered that his ‘tree change’ home is haunted. The tension between his blunt pragmatism and the need to deal with his situation leads him on a surprising journey. In Early Morning a couple wake too early and are beset by anxieties and paradoxes as they lie in bed – hoping that the other one will get up and make the coffee.
These works lovingly reveal the rubble of life journeys – negotiations with partners, relationships with children and aging parents, physical challenges – and the ricketty but enduring structures that are built from that rubble.
Kevin Nemeth is an award winning scriptwriter with over 30 years experience in the industry. He has been awarded five Australian Writers’ Guild Awards and has received another nine nominations. He lives near Castlemaine and draws much material and inspiration from his location.
Performed by veteran actors Anne Browning, Peter Houghton and Tom Gutteridge – directing each other – this team bring their years of experience and collaboration to bear on these world premiere works.
“From start to finish of this solo grand prix of performances, Bea prowls her high-rise corporate office, juggling seven phones and even more… crises”
– The Herald Sun (Anne Browning, The China Incident)
“a comic and performing tour de force… great invention and extraordinary physicality… a virtuoso piece of acting.”
– The Stage UK (Peter Houghton, The Pitch)
“Credentials… has meat for actors to sink their teeth into, with director Tom Gutteridge marshalling strong performances. Any new Williamson play attracts wide interest, and this is a better, riskier, and more ambitious work than anything he’s written recently“
– Sydney Morning Herald (Tom Gutteridge, Credentials by David Williamson)
TW Explosives Factory sits tucked away behind Acland Street, making it one of St Kilda’s grittier, more intimate performance spaces. The atmosphere is unpolished but welcoming, and you’ll find locals from all walks sinking into the mismatched seats for a dose of storytelling that feels both universal and uniquely Victorian. The plays themselves keep things grounded, with regional settings and characters that might remind you of someone you know. This is for anyone who prefers their drama low-key but deeply felt, and who enjoys theatre that isn’t afraid to confront the messiness of real life. It stands apart from bigger productions by focusing on smaller moments, letting humour and pathos sit side by side. Free entry is a bonus, so wander in and settle down-no fuss.
