About this event
Interstellar Live brings Nolan’s epic to the Plenary with a full orchestra, creating a rare chance to hear Zimmer’s soundtrack fill the room in real time. It’s not often we get a film and concert rolled into one, especially for free, so this is a night to savour in South Wharf.
After soldout performances across Europe, Christopher Nolan's masterpiece on the big screen with live orchestra playing Hans Zimmer's score.
With our time on Earth running out, a team of explorers sets out on the most important mission in human history: travelling beyond our galaxy to find humanity a future among the stars. Matthew McConaughey stars as ex-pilot-turned-farmer Cooper, alongside Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine and Jessica Chastain.
Among Interstellar’s five Academy Award nominations was Best Original Score, for what Hans Zimmer calls the favourite of his career. He built it around the pipe organ, and at the organ for every Australian performance is Roger Sayer, the organist Zimmer chose to record the original soundtrack. The voice you hear in the film is his, and in Melbourne he plays it live.
The first Australian tour reaches the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on Sunday 21 March 2027 – one night only – before culminating at the Sydney Opera House.
Some films are made to be played with an orchestra. Interstellar is one of them.

The Plenary Theatre at South Wharf suits these big-screen, big-sound experiences perfectly, and the acoustics make a live score truly powerful. That part of town leans a bit corporate by day, but on event nights it’s all about the crowd and anticipation. There’s something about hearing a score you know so well come alive with an orchestra that brings fresh goosebumps, especially with Roger Sayer himself on organ. This is a must for film fans, music lovers or anyone who has ever got chills from Zimmer’s signature sound. Unlike other movie-with-orchestra events in Melbourne, this one stands out for having the original organist Zimmer chose for the score, making it unique. If you’ve never seen a film this way, it’s well worth the outing.
