First and Exclusive Screening!
The Eternal Roots is a silent animated film by Mahmoud Salameh that traces the life of
a Palestinian family through the symbolism of an olive tree passed from one generation
to the next. Set against the backdrop of the separation wall, the story unfolds through
moments of tenderness, grief, defiance, and renewal, as one family’s connection to their land endures despite forces determined to uproot it.
Blending memory, myth, and political reality, the film uses recurring visual motifs — the
olive branch, the Palestinian sunbird, and the earth itself — to explore inheritance,
identity, displacement, and resilience across generations.
The event includes:
- conversation with the film maker
- live music
- food
Entry: $15 or $10 (conc. to be paid at the door). Proceeds go to film project.
Home-made Arab food for extra $20 (proceeds go to local caterer)

Understanding Palestine Series started in March 2024 as a response to the growing interest among Australians in the Palestinian issue, and the limited resources in English about the history, literature and culture of Palestine.
The Series is organized and delivered by Yousef Alreemawi; one of Australia’s leading experts in the history and culture of Palestine.
Since then, Yousef has delivered 49 lectures in in Northcote, and 10 lectures in Mama Chen in Foostcray. Additionally, he took the series to Sydney, Hobart, Brisbane and Adelaide.
This is a community film screening hosted at Democritus House in Northcote, organised by the Averroes Centre of Arab Culture. Attendees can expect an evening focused on artistic storytelling through animation, with the film using visual motifs to explore generational ties and identity. The setting suggests a gathering that encourages thoughtful engagement and discussion, typical of cultural lecture series. The event is likely to appeal to those interested in film, Middle Eastern history, or cultural studies. It is part of a broader series on Palestine, and the screening is described as a first and exclusive showing, making it notable for those seeking new or rare works in Melbourne's cultural calendar.
